The old college building was well maintained in all the years it was occupied. It was deemed important enough to be designated as a municipal heritage resource in 1984. It seemed likely that the building would be preserved for another century. All that changed when, on the evening of June 18, 2003, the Michener Administration building caught fire after being struck by lightening. Firefighters brought the blaze under control, but the entire fourth floor and portions of the third were heavily damaged. The building remained standing, but was left open to the elements as the province awaited a report on the structural integrity of the building.
