Only a short time after he became Chief Justice, Tweedie went to Lethbridge for the 1944 fall assizes of the Supreme Court. He had been wined and dined by the local bar and returned to the courthouse to sleep in the attic apartment reserved for visiting judges. While climbing the courthouse stairs Tweedie suffered a heart attack and was found dead by the caretaker early the next morning. His passing was seen as a great loss to the Bench and tributes poured in from the legal community.
