UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY
The University of Calgary Archives and Special Collections Department welcomes two new staff members to our unit. An agreement between the University of Calgary and the Provincial Archives of Alberta was recently signed which allows the University to store a limited volume of its records at the PAA in return for creating a sessional electronic records archivist post at the Provincial Archives.
Lori Podolsky Nordland, an MA student in the University of Manitoba's Archival Studies program, joined us in February. Lori is located at the Provincial Archives of Alberta and is focusing on electronic records management. She comes to the UofC from an internship at the International Development Research Centre in Ottawa where she had responsibility for developing and implementing a long-term digital preservation management strategy. Lori expects to complete her MA this year.
Kathleen Jurisprudencia joined Archives and Special Collections in December. Like Lori, Kathleen is located at the Provincial Archives of Alberta. She is responsible for the day to day management of the UofC records stored at the PAA, including creating box location tools and managing the transfer of records between Calgary and Edmonton as they are required by researchers. Kathleen is also busy creating an inventory listing of the Alberta Report photographic collection which was recently added to the University Archives holdings and which is currently housed at the PAA. Kathleen comes to the University of Calgary with an Archives Technician Diploma from Algonquin College and degrees in literature and art history. Kathleen has had experience at a number of archives in Ontario, including the Stratford Festival Archives, Labatt Breweries, Bank of Canada Archives, and the National Gallery of Canada.
Jennifer Willard joined the University Archives' permanent staff as an "Archives Specialist" (aka archives technician) in September 2004. Jen had been employed in the Archives as a casual staff member for over a year prior to her permanent appointment. We were very pleased to be able to make her position permanent as part of our restructuring process. Jen completed the Archives Technician Diploma program at Algonquin College in 1999 and subsequently worked as an Assistant Curator in the library and archives of Upper Canada Village, and as an Archival Assistant in the City of Ottawa Archives and the Anglican Diocese of Ottawa Archives. Jen contributes to the success of both the Archival Program and the Information Management Program in the University Archives.
RED DEER AND DISTRICT ARCHIVES
The Red Deer Archives was fortunate to be able to hire Keely Burkholder on three grants projects last fall. In January, the City of Red Deer provided funding which enabled the Archives to hire her full time in 2005. Originally from Edmonton, Keely is a graduate of the Information Management and Library Technology program at Grant McEwan College. She has had work experience in a variety of special, public and government libraries. Before moving to Red Deer she worked for the federal government at the Canada Customs and Revenue Agency Library gaining experience with records management, and other library tasks. Keely says "I am quite touched by how my colleagues have so warmly welcomed me since my arrival and thus, have made this a very pleasurable learning experience and fun working environment to be a part of. I am very excited to be here and look forward to continuing my contribution to the Archives team in anyway that I can! And, I also look forward to making Red Deer my new home! "
