Archives Network of Alberta News Janet McMaster, System Administrator, Archives Network of Alberta
Our databases continue to grow and flourish as new contributions are sent in by our members. The following numbers are effective as of November 30, 2004.
ANA Database
The ANA database of fonds level descriptions contains 8691 descriptions from 38 institutions. Contributions of new fonds level descriptions have recently been received from Athabasca Archives, Grande Prairie Regional Archives, Provincial Archives of Alberta, and Red Deer and District Archives. Revisions and updates to existing descriptions are being done regularly by a number of institutions.
Alberta InSight
Our photograph database also continues to grow. We currently have 23,979 images from 18 different institutions. Recent contributions have been received from Glenbow Archives, Jewish Archives and Historical Society, and Provincial Archives of Alberta.
Alberta InWord
Alberta InWord, our database containing scanned textual records (diaries, letters, etc.) was launched one year ago. We now have 8 institutions participating and a total of 655 descriptions (representing over 25,000 scanned pages.) Thank you to Glenbow Archives, Jewish Archives and Historical Society, and Provincial Archives of Alberta for their recent contributions. Check this database regularly, as new contributions for the Prairie Populism Project are being received on almost a daily basis.
A tutorial for the databases was developed as part of our Archival Resources in the Classroom project. This will be available on our web site shortly - stay tuned!
From a usage perspective, in addition to our institutional members who regularly access our databases to add/revise records, we average 6500 - 7000 user sessions per month from the public access pages. For the quarter ending September 30, 2004, we had the highest number of user sessions to date: 21,850. If you require any usage statistics to include in reports or presentations, please let me know.
As System Administrator, my role is to respond to questions about the system, coordinate training activities, vet descriptions and process bulk uploads. If you have any questions about the Archives Network of Alberta, or wish to arrange for training, please contact me at (403) 236-3406 or jmcmast@shaw.ca .
