In Profile : the Alberta archives community welcomes Terry Reilly
Submitted by Linda Fraser

In August 2003, Terry Reilly assumed the position of Assistant Director of Archives and Special Collections at the University of Calgary. This newly created position is responsible for the administration of the four primary resource units at the University: the Canadian Architectural Archives, Museum of the Regiments Archives and Library, Rare Books and Special Collections, and the University Archives.

Leaving family and friends behind in Toronto, including daughters Margaret and Judith, Terry moved to Calgary to undertake her new responsibilities. She also left behind her previous position, held since 1979, as Archivist for The General Synod of the Anglican Church of Canada. Previously, Terry held other archival positions and was assistant editor of the Dictionary of Canadian Biography at the University of Toronto Press.

During her term as General Synod Archivist, Terry is credited with establishing an archives and records management program that became a model for all of the dioceses of the church throughout Canada. This program became critical when the Anglican Church of Canada was hit by more than 1500 lawsuits filed by former students of Indian residential schools. The lawsuits forced the church into years of litigation and near bankruptcy and Terry provided much needed litigation support, testified to the authenticity of historical documentation, and provided research services, as well as the interpretation of records. She also created networks, training manuals, and workshops. Her contributions to the field of religious archives was recognized in 2003, when she was awarded the Sister M. Claude Lane, O. P., Memorial Award by the Society of American Archivists.

Terry also has a distinguished record of service to the archival profession. She has held many positions in the Association of Canadian Archivists, including Treasurer, Vice President, and President. She has been active in the Canadian Council of Archives, the International Council of Archives, and the Society of American Archivists. She has also been involved with the World Student Christian Federation Archives, the Student Christian Movement of Canada, and the International Working Group on Archives of the Anglican Communion. Since coming to Calgary, Terry has joined the Calgary Historical Society.

Terry's research interests lie in the areas of Canadian women's history, Canadian religious history, and in the archival theory and practice of documentation strategies. She has particular interest in the areas of church history and first nations justice issues.
