EMERGENCY AND DISASTER PREPAREDNESS FOR CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS

Date(s):September 20-21, 2002
Location:Legal Archives Society of Alberta
Rm. 505, 919 B 11 Avenue SW
Calgary, Alberta
Course description:

Emergency and disaster planning is a key component of ensuring the ongoing preservation and care of an institution=s holdings, yet many institutions do not have a current plan to guide them in the event of a disaster.

This workshop discusses the importance of an emergency response plan and provides instruction in creating one. The workshop also presents aspects such as hazard identification and reduction; salvage considerations after a disaster, such as handling, stabilization and Afirst-aid@; and long-term recovery, including human danger, stabilization of the environment, and various conservation treatments.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to plan and develop an emergency response plan; identify and take measures to avoid, reduce or eliminate potential hazards; assess, prioritize, and salvage artifacts and collections; implement an emergency response plan; and employ proper health and safety actions in the event of an emergency.
