Grant Committee Annual Report Submitted by Brock Silversides, Chair, June 2002
The Grants Committee for 2001-2002 consisted of 5 members: myself from Medicine Hat, Judy Kovacs from Edmonton, Carolyn Hill from Wetaskiwin, and Tonia Fanella and Jason Pierce from Calgary. Assisting and guiding the deliberations (although not a voting member) was Michael Gourlie.
We adjudicated 7 series of grants this last year. Most of the applications we thought were well done, although we did need to ask a few applicants for further clarification on specific points.
We all filled out scoring sheets for each project. The sheets had 5 elements:
1. Whether the applicant received funding the previous year
2. Whether the project fell within the mandate of the institution, and the arguments as to why it was important to that institution
3. The relevance of the records for researchers
4. The clarity of the project description and the planning involved
5. Whether the project would have a positive impact for the archival community
The scores were then averaged and projects ranked.
All other things being equal, we tried to distribute the available funds as widely as possible throughout the membership, to include as many institutions as possible and to have a balance both geographically and between large and small institutions.
