Cain Committee Annual Report
Submitted by Janet McMaster, Chair, June 2002
This has been a busy year for our committee. One of the main activities that we have undertaken over the past year has been providing guidance and advice to the Board on CAIN-related matters. This included providing recommendations for questions to be included in the CAIN survey last summer, and working with the Grants Committee to establish criteria for provincial CAIN grants. We were also involved with the process of choosing new hardware and software. We provided the Board with a list of mandatory requirements for hardware and software, and several of our Committee members participated in the software demos and the selection process.
In October, we prepared a number of recommendations that were submitted to the Board relating to issues that were identified in the CAIN survey and in Marlene Van Ballegooie's report. This was followed in December by a list of CAIN deliverables and recommended completion dates. Deliverables included finalizing the contract with Cinemage, purchasing computers for institutional members, transferring the ASA web site to a new server, etc. In addition, we recommended hiring a part-time Systems Administrator to co-ordinate the technical aspects of the project, and we were very pleased when Bill Purver accepted this position.
On the national front, the CAIN web site (http://www.cain-rcia.ca/) was launched on October 20, 2001. In March, representatives from our committee participated in a CAIN Consultation in Ottawa. This gave us an opportunity to hear about the first six months of CAIN nationally and participate in discussions about future directions. While in Ottawa, we participated in the ACA's CAIN Education Roundtable held the same weekend. A national CAIN list-serv composed of CAIN Coordinators from the various provinces and territories has recently been re-established, and we hope that this will be a good forum for discussion and updates as time progresses.
Recent activities include preparing guidelines for digitization projects (spearheaded by Susan and Garth) and creating a Vision Statement for the future of ANA (Michael). More details about these exciting new initiatives will be available soon.
The members of the CAIN Committee are: Susan Kooyman, Liana Haynes, Michael Gourlie and Garth Clarke (Board liaison). In addition, we have recently welcomed a new member to the Committee, Raymond Frogner. This has been a very active and productive Committee, and I would like to thank my committee members for their hard work and enthusiasm over the past year.
