NEWSLETTER September 1997 Volume 17 Number 2 EXECUTIVE NOTESThe newly elected and appointed Executive has held two meetings since the May Annual General Meeting. The first meeting was held on June 21 at the U of A's BARD facility in Edmonton. Items discussed, and highlights from this meeting include the following: The ASA donated a $50.00 prize for the Calgary District Heritage Fair. The Membership Committee submitted a three year workplan for the Executive to review. The Committee is working on a number of membership issues, and their liaison on the Executive is Lorraine Mychajlunow. The Public Awareness Committee continues to update the ASA web page, and is working on ideas that Archives might consider implementing during the 1997 Archives Week. Lynette Walton is the executive liaison for this committee. The Executive has submitted a special initiatives grant proposal to the Canadian Council of Archives. If approved, funding will be available to facilitate the Archives Advisor's involvement in updating ANA entries and other projects. A proposal from Donna Kynaston and Jennifer Bobrovitz to complete phase 1 of the ASA records management project was accepted by the Executive. A second meeting of the Executive was held on July 26th at the International Hotel in Calgary. Following, are items of interest from this meeting. Michael Gourlie and Kate Gunn have been hired to fill the positions of Archives Advisor and Archives Coordinator respectively. The Public Awareness Committee has sent letters to archival institutions describing an idea for a virtual exhibit for Archives Week. Workplans were submitted to the Executive from the Newsletter, Education, and Public Awareness Committees. Much of the meeting was given to reviewing and discussing these plans. The Executive is in the process of obtaining copyright clearance on six ACCESS-produced Archives videos. Once we have clearance, the videos will be available for members to view and use. The ASA has been invited to participate in a meeting with the Minister of Community Development to share thoughts for what should be brought forward from the heritage sector at the Provincial Growth Summit. There will be approximately 35 people attending this meeting, including representatives from five heritage groups. A committee will soon be struck to begin planning for the 1998 ASA Annual General Meeting. The next scheduled meeting of the ASA Executive is September 6th in Calgary.
