ALAN D. RIDGE AWARDS PRESENTED

One of the highlights of the ASA's Annual General Meeting is the announcement of the Alan D. Ridge Publications Awards. The awards, named in honor of Alberta's provincial archivist from 1968 to 1984, are adjudicated by a subcommittee of the Membership/Nominations & Elections/Awards Committee. They are given in recognition and reward to Albertans who have published material of a high quality and scholarly nature which promotes, discusses, or analyzes topics relevant to the archival profession. They may be awarded for books, brochures, manuals, pamphlets, or articles. Each year, a Cash Award of $250.00 may be given, and additional Special Awards of Merit.

Wayne Murdoch presents the
Alan D. Ridge Award to
Elizabeth Denham.

This year, the awards were presented at the Annual ASA Banquet by Wayne Murdoch on behalf of the Awards Subcommittee. According to Wayne, there was some deliberation over the meaning of the term "publishing" in the electronic age, but it was decided to make a special mention of the ANA Task Force for its production of the Archives Network of Alberta (ANA) database.

The Cash Award was presented to Elizabeth Denham for her article "Dealing With the Records of Closing Hospitals: The Calgary Area Health Authority Plan" which appeared in Archivaria, No. 41 (Spring 1996).

A Special Award of Merit was earned by Lorraine Mychajlunow and Karen Richardson for their thematic guide Directory of Nursing Archival Resources in Alberta, published by the Alberta Association of Registered Nurses.
