NEWSLETTER September 1996 Volume 16 Number 2 PUBLICATION ON APPRAISAL OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT RECORDS AVAILABLEThe New York State Archives and Records Administration (SARA) announces a new publication, Appraisal of Local Government Records for Historical Value by Prudence Backman, No. 50 in the Local Government Records Technical Information Series. Appraisal is the process used to determine which records to keep permanently. This publication gives local officials a general understanding of how to identify, evaluate and select records that have ongoing historical value. The 41-page booklet recognizes that each community has its own unique history and therefore, the historical importance or value of a record series may vary for each local government. It provides local government officials with an overview of the process of appraising records for historical value and includes three charts that help with the appraisal process and gathering of background information; and appraisal checklist; and case studies using tow record series -- journals and subject and correspondence files. To receive a copy of this publication contact Local Government Records Services, State Archives and Records Administration, State Education Department, 10A63 Cultural Education Center, Albany NY 12230 U.S.A.
