ANA UPDATE

NEW CONTRIBUTORS

The ANA database is growing! The ANA Task Force is very pleased to welcome several new contributors to the provincial database. Descriptions of records held by the City of Wetaskiwin Archives, Jasper Yellowhead Museum and Archives, Calgary Highlanders Museum and Archives, and Claresholm and District Museum are now available. The Provincial Archives of Alberta has also started to contribute descriptions. Visit any ASA Institutional Member connected to ANA and have a look!

WORD PROCESSOR TEMPLATE FOR WRITING ANA DESCRIPTIONS

In the questionnaire which the ANA Task Force distributed at the Annual General Meeting, many institutions said they would like a word processing template to facilitate the preparation of fonds-level descriptions for the ANA database. Templates are now available for WordPerfect 5.1, WordPerfect 6, and MS Word. Archives Advisor Elizabeth Denham would be happy to supply you with the appropriate template.

WHITEHORSE CONFERENCE

At the annual Association of Canadian Archivists conference in Whitehorse, Paddy Lamb and Susan Kooyman presented a session on behalf of the ASA, about the development of Alberta's archival network. During the presentation they described the creation of the provincial database, the distribution of modems and communications software, and the hands-on training provided to ASA Institutional Members. The database itself was also demonstrated. The session was well attended and very well received, and since then the ANA Task Force has provided information about our activities to several other provincial archives associations.

10TH BATTALION NOMINAL ROLL

A wonderful resource for genealogists is now available to all institutions connected to the ANA database. The Calgary Highlanders Museum and Archives has shared with us the nominal roll of the 10th Battalion. This database includes the name, rank, enrolment date, medals and awards, casualties, next of kin and other military information about over 5000 men who served with the 10th Battalion during World War I. To find the database, ASA Institutional Members connected to ANA should dial into ANA in the regular way. At the main search screen press the "escape" key twice. Choose "Open database" from the menu at the bottom of the screen, then choose "10th_BN" from the list. You do not need a password, so simply hit "enter" when it asks for one. All the fields are indexed, and you may browse through the indexes by using the "F3" function key.
