During the 1960s economic boom, a well-known Calgary landmark defined Calgary's skyline - the Calgary Tower. The tower stands about 600 feet high. The 40-ton needle, being placed on top of the tower in this image, is 52 feet long, and took two cranes to hoist into position. Today, skyscrapers built since have dwarfed the Calgary Tower, but the tower still marks the Calgary skyline in a unique and recognizable way.
