The Princess of the Stars was presented by the
Banff Centre for the Arts on Two Jack Lake near Banff, in conjunction with
the Parks Canada Centennial in 1985. Composed by R. Murray Schafer, the
work is an environmental opera that is performed in canoes on a lake at
dawn. It draws on mythologies from native cultures to celebrate the
sunrise and the Canadian wilderness. Over 5,000 attended the production,
which was co-directed by Schafer and Brian Macdonald, and designed by
Jerrard and Diana Smith. Photograph by Ed Ellis.
