In the letter which accompanies these moccasins, Canadian writer Earle Birney notes, "These little moccasins were keepsakes of my mother's. She once told me they were my 'first shoes'. I don't remember that far back". Born in Calgary in 1904 when it was still part of the Northwest Territories, Birney spent his early life near Lacombe. He became internationally recognized for his prose, fiction and poetry, especially the poem "David". Earle Birney passed away in 1995. His archives are located in the University of Calgary Library and many other repositories across Canada.
