     Bert Riggall fonds. -- [ca.1865]-1959, predominant [ca.1890]-1959. -- ca.14,000 photographs. -- 16 photograph albums. -- ca.2 m of textual records and print material. -- 4 multimedia records. -- ca.30 cartographic records. -- Frederick Herbert (Bert) Riggall, 1884-1959, was a mountain guide, outfitter, hunter, trapper, rancher, naturalist, photographer, writer and gunsmith/loader in southern Alberta, Canada.  Bert and Dora (Williams) Riggall homesteaded, ranched and operated their guiding and outfitting business adjacent to Waterton Lakes National Park.  Daughters, Kay Riggall (Russell), 1909-1984, and Doris "Babe" Riggall (Burton), 1910-1999, were able riders, markswomen and packtrain workers.  Bert Riggall was renowned for his knowledge of botany, geology, zoology, wilderness life and lore, as well as literature and current affairs.   He was also an accomplished photographer who specialized in wildlife and landscapes.

I.  Personal and professional

Personal and professional series. -- 1884-1959. -- 56 cm of textual records. -- 10 graphic records. -- Series consists of three sub-series:  A. Diaries and notes, 1900-1956  (1. Diaries and notebooks, 2. Reminiscences and notes); B. Correspondence, 1907-1959; C. Personal papers, 1884-1959 (1. Personal, 2. Artwork, 3. Publications re home, school and travel).  Diaries and notebooks consist of trip diaries, photography notebooks and general notebooks.  Included are trip accounts, personal biography, lists re horses, camps and grub, pack train business itineraries, personal travel accounts, photography shot lists, and other.  Correspondence consists mainly of letters from clients, friends, family and suppliers regarding guiding, hunting and fishing trips, personal matters, guns, photography, taxidermy, other.  Includes some copies of out-going letters.-- Constitutes Series I of the Bert Riggall fonds.

Guiding and ranching, [ca.1910]-1952 (1. Stationery, 2. Lists, 3. Maps, 4. Client papers and photographs, 5. Guiding organizations, 6. Hitch photographs); B. Gunsmithing, shooting and loading, [ca.1910-ca.1955] (1. Business records, 2. Print material); C. Financial records, 1909-1957.  Client papers and photographs pertain mainly to pack trips and hunting trips led by Bert Riggall for the “Four Families,” consisting of the Franklin M. Crosby, Charles C. Bovey, Russell M. Bennett and Sumner T. McKnight families of Minneapolis, Minnesota. -- Constitutes Series II of the Bert Riggall fonds.

Standard photographs, 1903-1954, ca.8290 photographs, 6 photograph albums (1. Guiding trips, 2. Subjects); B. Panoramas, [ca.1910-ca.1955], ca.2000 photographs; C. Transparencies, [ca.1930-ca.1955], ca.680 photographs (1. Dufaycolor, 2. Kodachrome); D. Textual records, 1915-1954, 4 cm. (1. General, 1915-1954,  2.
