     George K. K. Link fonds. -- [ca.1887-ca.1976]. -- ca.50 cm of textual records. -- ca.1000 photographs : mainly transparencies. -- George K. K. "Tommy" Link, 1887-1979, professor of Plant Pathology at the University of Chicago, spent many summers between 1928 and 1977 studying the Lake O'Hara region and building trails there, accompanied by his wife, Adeline Link, d.1943.  The Links were frequently guided by Jim Boyce. -- Fonds pertaining mainly to the Lake O'Hara region, consists of  four series:  I. Writing, research and translation, ca.1887-ca.1975;  II. Personal papers, 1960-ca.1976;  III. Lake O'Hara Trails Club papers, 1949-1973;  IV. Photographs, 1937-ca.1960.

I. Writing, research and translation

Writing, research and translation series. -- [ca.1887-ca.1975]. -- ca.45 cm of textual records and  photographs. -- Series consists of manuscript drafts, notes, correspondence, maps and print material pertaining to writing, editing and translation projects, including "The Ways of Lake O'Hara," and the "Map of Lake O'Hara Region South Area." -- Title based on contents of series. -- Photographic prints have been maintained within textual files. --  Constitutes Series I of the George K. K. Link fonds.

III. Lake O'Hara Trails Club

Lake O'Hara Trails Club series. -- 1949-1973. -- 1 file of textual records (.5 cm) -- Minutes of meetings re objectives, membership and by-laws. Correspondence between Club and Minister of Northern Affairs and National Resources re limited vehicle access to Lake O'Hara. Letter re financial obligations by Club and Dr. Link for the production of the map and treatise. -- Location : M60 / 54.

 

IV. Photographs

Photographs series. -- 1937-[ca.1960]. -- ca.1025 photographs (ca.1000 transparencies, col, ca.25 prints). --  Dr. Link's transparencies were in the custody of  Sheila Kimber from 1972-1994.  Kimber (then Miss Curtis) worked at Lake O'Hara Lodge in 1951 and spent time with Dr. Link there in 1964? and again in 1966.  Link gave her some of his slides in 1972. -- Transparencies pertain mainly to the Lake O'Hara / Lake McArthur regions; also Lake Louise, Skoki and Icefield Parkway areas and Grand Canyon, U.S.A.  Includes views of landscapes, hiking, some horse travel, flora and fauna views. -- Title based on contents of series. -- Some views are attributed to Adeline Link (100 items). -- Transparencies are in fair to good condition. -- Transparencies have been maintained in the order received, roughly geographical, although the order may have been disturbed before receipt.  Link often provided box labels and donors provided some identifications (not always accurate).  Adeline Link transparencies are maintained together at the end of the series. -- Constitutes Series IV of the George K. K. Link fonds. -- Location : V276.
