Caroline Hinman fonds. -- 1913-1960. -- 10 photograph albums (ca.3300 prints). -- ca.1600 photographs (574 prints, ca.1000 transparencies). -- 17 motion pictures. -- 4 cm of textual records. -- Caroline Hinman, 1884-1966, was a trip/tour leader who worked out of Summit, New Jersey, U.S.A. Between 1913 and 1916, Hinman offered a wide variety of pack, motor and rail trips through the Rockies, fishing expeditions in British Columbia, as well as camping trips. Hinman's motto, "Off the beaten track," became the hallmark of her adventures. -- Fonds pertains to Hinman's career and travels in the Canadian Rockies and consists of: I. Photograph albums; II. I. Photograph albums Photograph albums series. -- 1913-1937. -- 10 albums (ca.3300 prints). -- Albums pertain mainly to Caroline Hinman camping trips in the Canadian Rockies; also includes some hunting and walking trips. Each trip covered a wide area and included many camps. Trips were led by Caroline Hinman and attended by young women and men mainly from the United States. Lillian Gest was a frequent participant. Jim Boyce was lead guide for most trips. Other guides included Curly Phillips, Charlie Hunter, Rex Harrison, Red Cathcart, Ulysse La Casse, Slim Hawkins, Bert Wilkins, Moberly brothers, Woodworth brothers and many others. Prints pertain to Caroline Hinman and her camping, climbing, hiking, horse, canoe and motor trips in the Canadian Rockies. Includes camps, hunting, climbs, Skyline Hikes, pack trips, scenery etc. Some views pertain to trip personnel such as Jim Boyce and Curly Phillips, and clients such as Lillian Gest. Transparencies pertain to Caroline Hinman trips in the Canadian Rockies. travel views from around the world. Includes scenic views from Caroline Hinman trips in the Canadian Rockies; also Banff area views, such as Cascades of Time Gardens; Jasper views and wildlife views. International trips include Guatemala and Africa. IV. Textual records Textual records. -- 1915-1960. -- 4 cm of textual records. -- Series consists of diaries, notebooks, manuscripts, trip accounts, advertising materials and other material. One of the diaries refers to an early trip (1915) with Mary Jobe and Curly Phillips, Robson Pass.
