     Hubert Green fonds. -- 1927-1962. -- ca.47 cm of textual records. -- ca.1000 photographs : prints, negatives, transparencies. -- 2 motion picture strips. -- Hubert Unsworth Green, 1886-1962, was a police officer, naturalist, writer and national park warden at Dauphin, Manitoba and Banff, Alberta, Canada. He was also known by pseudonyms, Cecil Erskine and Tony Lascelles.  Green came to Canada in 1905 and served with the RNWMP for twenty-five years, much of his service in the vicinity of Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba.  While living in Dauphin, Green pursued his interest in wildlife research and was much influenced by Grey Owl.  In the late 1930s, Green came to Banff and served as a temporary warden during the war, continuing as a special warden until 1956. He completed numerous wildlife studies and, in later years, he was engaged in the study of western Canadian history, particularly ranching. -- Fonds consists of three series: I. Literary series, 1927-1962; II. Conservation and natural history series, 1927-1962; III. Personal papers and photographs series, 1927-1962.

I.  Literary papers

Literary papers series. -- 1927-1962. -- 41.5 cm of textual records. -- Series consists of two sub-series:  A. Conservation and wildlife, 1927-1962 (research material, writing, correspondence);  B. History, 1957-1961 (research material, writing). Manuscripts include newspaper and magazine articles on conservation topics, government conservation studies and reports, and historical manuscripts. -- Constitutes Series I of the Hubert U. Green fonds.

II.  Conservation and natural history

Conservation and natural history series. -- 1927-1962. -- ca.1000 photographs. -- Series consists of four sub-series:  A. Flora and fauna, 1927-1962 (prints and negatives, transparencies, other);  B. Western Canada, 1927-1962 (Manitoba, Banff National Park);  C. People and places, 1927-1962;  D. Other, 1927-1962. Series is entirely photographic records pertaining mainly to animal studies by Hubert Green while at Riding Mountain National Park, Manitoba, and Banff National Park. Includes material on beavers, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, cougars, bears and other animals; also animal kills and trapping. Also includes some camping scenes, photographs of Grey Owl and Charles G. D. Roberts and some prints by Burt Gresham. -- Constitutes Series II of the Hubert U. Green fonds.
