Figure skating is the oldest sport on the Olympic Winter programme. It was even on the programme in the Games of the Olympiad in London held in 1908 and again in 1920 in Antwerp.
In the 1988 Olympics the figure skating events were comprised of three segments: the compulsory figures, the short programme, and the free skate.
