Archivematica Workshop

The ASA is presenting a one-day digital preservation workshop at the University of Calgary on Friday, November 5.

The workshop will provide a combination of theory and hands-on practice using Archivematica, an integrated suite of open-source software tools designed to manage the digital preservation process from ingest to access.  Participants will discuss the requirements of the Reference Model for an Open Archival Information System (OAIS) and how to translate those requirements into specific, concrete actions using open-source tools.  Learn about preparing Submission Information Packages for ingest, identifying and validating file formats, adding descriptive and technical metadata, normalizing records into preservation formats, packaging an Archival Information Package, storing preserved objects and making Dissemination Information packages available to end-users via an ICA-AtoM web interface.

Participants will be provided with computer workstations pre-loaded with Archivematica software. No specialized computer skills are required, but familiarity with OAIS is recommended.  For a useful introduction to OAIS, please see “The open archival information system reference model: Introductory guide” by Brian F. Lavoie at
www.dpconline.org/docs/lavoie_OAIS.pdf. For more information on the Archivematica project, please see www.archivematica.org.
