Muskrat at Wye, August 1958. PA.2774/1

Trapping muskrats for fur trade with Europe began in Alberta in the 18th century. Because of the value of the pelts, muskrat farming, which is regulated by the government, later became a lucrative practice. Muskrat pelts are rated by quality and size, measured from tip of nose to highest area at base of the tail.
