The informality of this pose makes for a somewhat unusual portrait of a dog and his master. Throughout history, many pets have been included in family portraits as they were, and are, considered to be important members of the family. Dr. Ferries was a member of the Edmonton Old Timers Association which is one of Edmonton's oldest chartered clubs. It was founded in 1894 by a group of 36 pioneers who either trekked across the prairies from the east or worked their way up the Saskatchewan River by boat. The original objectives of the association were twofold; the preservation of the early history of the settlement, and the fostering of harmonious relations amongst the pioneers of the district.
