The Ullman family were homesteaders on the Jewish Montefiore colony near Sibbald and Rumsay, Alberta. Colonies such as these in central and southern Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan were collective farming colonies sponsored by Sir Moses Montefiore, the British Jewish Millionaire, or Baron de Hirsch, who attempted to re-settle Jews from Eastern Europe on farms in Canada. Although the experiment did not succeed (by 1930, most Jewish families had left the colonies for the larger towns and cities), many of their descendants of the Montefiore colony still live in Alberta today.
