When a Ronald steam-powered pumper was purchased for the Calgary Fire Department in 1886, horses were needed to pull it to the scene of the fire. Initially, the Fire department depended on private owners of horse-teams to respond to the fire bell; the first person to hitch up to the apparatus and deliver it to the fire received $5.00 cash.
