Defenseless

Despite the efforts of Okotoks and Calgary fire brigades, the public watched helplessly as the Midland Pacific grain elevator burnt to the ground Feb. 23, 1949. Luckily, a backed-up beaver dam allowed firemen's hoses to reach the river. This, along with men armed with "buckets, stirrup pumps and scoop shovels," prevented the coal sheds and feed mill from burning. Okotoks did not build a water and sewer system until 1952.
